Ship carrying sodium cyanide hits a ship carrying jet fuel for the US navy…

This is sounding less and less like an accident by the minute.

Running a ship into another ship in order to cause a deliberate fuel leak seems like a rather weird attack strategy.

I dunno. Seemed like an accident the first time somebody dragged an anchor to cut internet cables too.

It could just be incompetence, these ships often have minimum crews, minimum training and minimum wages, and apparently wasn’t carrying cyanide after all. But the tanker was still taking jet fuel to a US navy base, who presumably won’t be able to run as many missions until they get more.

The way the world has been going in the last ten years means I’m no longer a big believer in coincidences.

          What’s the minimum crew count?

So who benefits? If this was an attack then it has to have come from somewhere, so who would want to do this?

Russia, no they want the US to have as much jet fuel as possible, a militarily powerful us is a problem for Europe and a good thing for Russia.

The UK, extremely unlikely we would want to pollute our own waters just to piss off the Americans.

Europe, highly unlikely and goes completely against all previous behavior. Also doesn’t really achieve anything in the long run and Europe is always about the long view.

China, possible but also like Europe doesn’t really achieve any long-term objectives.

A middle Eastern terrorist organization, doubtful if they cared that much they would just blow it up. They are not subtle in their attacks.

I just cannot think of a single political entity that would benefit in any way from doing this. The best I can come up with is Iran trying to make oil reserves spouse and forcing Europe to buy from them. But this would need to be the first move of a long-term policy and it doesn’t seem likely there would be able to keep that ruse up for long enough to have any real effect.

Sometimes things crash into other things. It doesn’t require some secret cabal to be responsible.

Call me Mr Tinfoil Hat, but: Arrested ship’s captain is Russian national

Trump may well be on Russia’s side, but Russia are on nobody’s side.

Or it could just be a vodka fuelled captain asleep at the wheel, happily ignoring all the alarms and bells that are supposed to go off because they’re literally going off all the time.

Let’s create a list of countries who don’t have any grievances with the United States, so we can narrow down the suspects:

I wonder how one can ram a rather large tanker at anchor in a quiet sea with high visibility.

I think they will have to test the freighters crew for drugs and alcohol.

Just as soon as they can rapidly climb to intercept Russian bombers I’d guess.
