Be really interested to know what it’s made out of. Had a coworker who used to work in forgings and did some stuff that got sent to nuclear plants, they said that they had really strict requirements on material compositions, specifically needed to ensure that the (think it was steel, may have been something else) material had basically no traces of cobalt in it because the cobalt would becomes radioactive over the service life.

I recall talking to a vendor back… 8 years ago? Who had a colleague trialling hololens augmented maintenance. I personally felt it would be amazing to be able to look at equipment, bring up a model and explode it to get a look at (Yeah I know you can do that with a laptop, manufacturing lines have notoriously shitty wifi, not to mention greasy around equipment), assisted procedures were a cool idea too, helps people who may not be super familiar with your specific equipment, like shift or loaner maintenance people.

Over a decade ago, different company, they had a bounty on video procedures, you’d strap a go pro to your head and record something like changing batteries, replacing o-rings, removal of electronics etc for a cash bonus. I’m a text and photo person but I totally see the value in video documentation.

Microsoft had a demo at an ignite conference in 2020 if I recall of hololens doing ar metrics, person looked at things like the elevator and would give them real-time performance data, definitely a gimmick but I still think AR could be useful in an industrial setting.

If you’re ok with some bulk, go for an nvme enclosure. I have a sabrent one with a 256 GB crucial gen 3 drive in it, it’s a slow cheap drive, still substantially better than any usb key and you can put one together for under $100 cad including a longer high speed cable.

I’m not sure if regedit has changed much either, certainly seems like it’s the same since using it in xp? Odbc windows are 100% 3.1 though.

Feel like task scheduler, event viewer and partitioning tools have been relatively static as well, but they’re not as old as the odbc window. Tbh I’m not surprised that administrative/dev tools haven’t had a ui change.

SW was great to use back in uni but holy hell is it full of phone home stuff and really annoying these days, I scrapped my license, they straight up wouldn’t let me cancel within 30 days of renewal so I yanked my cc and “cancelled” that way.

Use FreeCAD, mentioned in a few posts, it’s got some clunk but it’s 100% useable, has more than enough features for prosumer/hobbyist use, personally I’d make an argument it’s fine for enterprise use too, Ondsel seems to think so considering that’s the market they’re targeting with their releases. I’d recommend the Ondsel release or Realthunder’s (what I currently use) which has features/fixes that will be merged back, and 100% look at mainline freecad when the 1.0 release drops

Seriously, cinnamon rolls (at least the ones I make) are brioche and while the dough is pretty heavily butter reinforced, I wouldn’t ever use greasy to describe them after baking even after frosting.

Brioche isn’t supposed to be cloyingly sweet either, supposed to be subtle, I’ve done rolls like these from king Arthur, added sugar is 7.5% of flour.

Seriously, had a lumia 1020, for the time its photos were fantastic, especially compared to the 4s work issued me, was never really against a camera bump tbh but it totally sold me on the idea.

Have a pixel these days and seriously impressed with what smart phone photos can look like these days, found my Sony Eriksson slide from 2006ish the other day had a memory stick in it, the photos are worse than webcam photos, really rough.

If you’re not committed, you don’t actually need an appliance for it, have had great results with a Dutch oven and a programmable BBQ thermometer monitoring the water temp. One of my burners goes really low so just a matter of adjusting to keep in range. You don’t get forced circulation (get some natural circulation though) and it’s not set and forget, but you can do with stuff you probably already have on hand. Done with heavy freezer bags before I was gifted a vacuum sealer.

That’s def manufacturing in general, worked for a while in a flat roll steel mill originally in galvanizing and eventually some plant wide stuff. A new galv line is easily in that range (they’ll go for the cheapest bid and then spend twice that remediating design/QC issues), large scale production isn’t cheap!

Ups staffs their warehouses (or at least did when I worked there as a temp) heavily with temp agency staff who they can toss at any point, they don’t give a shit and while my experience was on the packing side (shrink wrapped bundles, barcode stickers, in store displays) some people did do the shipping side, it sucked and they talked about people throwing things around to meet targets, the quotas were unreasonable, paid next to nothing and the threat of termination was used as a “motivator”, by far the worst working experience of my life and I expect FedEx does the same thing. Met some cool people though so not all bad.

Doesn’t onshape originate from a bunch of SW engineers so that’d make sense!

Personally, I was paying for SW with a maker license but this year I’ve committed to Freecad, use realthunder’s fork that has the topo naming fix + modern ui workbench for a more familiar layout.

I would call it totally useable, workflow for me ends up the same or similar to solidworks, I tried fusion because that’s really popular but it didn’t click with me while freecad did. I won’t pretend it’s flawless and doesn’t have quirks but I’m willing to accept that for foss, need to spend a bit of time with it to get used to what it expects you to do but it’s really powerful once you do.

I can get that for sure, I did see a client using it for debugging which seemed interesting as well, made an attempt to narrow down where the error occurred and what actually caused it.

I gave it a fair shake after my team members were raving about it saving time last year, I tried a SFTP function and some Terraform modules and man both of them just didn’t work. it did however do a really solid job of explaining some data operation functions I wrote, which I was really happy to see. I do try to add a detail block to my functions and be explicit with typing where appropriate so that probably helped some but yeah, was actually impressed by that. For generation though, maybe it’s better now, but I still prefer to pull up the documentation as I spent more time debugging the crap it gave me than piecing together myself.

I’d use a llm tool for interactive documentation and reverse engineering aids though, I personally think that’s where it shines, otherwise I’m not sold on the “gen ai will somehow fix all your problems” hype train.

Engineering prof in uni was big on journals/log books for cyoa and it’s stuck with me, I write down everything I do during the day, research, findings etc, easily the best bit of advice I ever had.

I’m always personally wary of storing blobs in a database if for no other reason it’s going to totally be more expensive to store on a server rather than in some sort of blob storage.

I think I did it back in xp, I was trying to figure out when support was added.
