Buying a house in three years sounds bonkers, from a bizarro world.

Technology@lemmy.world•US Trade Dominance Will Soon Begin to Crack
3·21 days agoWell I was mostly alluding to the fact that there is a large swath of Trump voters that are surprised they were directly affected by policies they voted for. At the same time as the President commonly pardons a couple of turkeys (out of thousands), I thought it would be a fitting allegory.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Where will Santa live when the polar ice caps are gone?
31·26 days agoYou can’t surely be comparing Santa Claus to our Lord and Savior, one is a magical figure that judges us by seeing everything we do and promises reward or retribution.
I’m either the Billie Jean or the Moonwalker.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What mediocre game, show, or movie has an incredible soundtrack?
2·28 days agoI could catch a lot of flak from this opinion but I wonder if Cyberpunk 2077 could fit in this category: I have probably something around 100 hours in that game just because I like going around in the city and there’s some great writing, both for the main questline and even some random side-quests. But as much freedom I have from choosing how I want to deal with a mission, neither combat nor hacking is fun IMO. Hacking feels more like an overpowered magic ability that if you put enough points into it, it lets you cheat the game, and fighting is mostly a big mess, be it physical or shooting.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What mediocre game, show, or movie has an incredible soundtrack?
1·29 days agoThe Neverhood is a flawed gem, one of those fantastic point&click adventure games that have some of that moon-logic malaise so common in Sierra games, up to an absurd point.
Yet every other aspect of the game is polished and fantastic enough I would recommend it with enough warning.
I would definitely not call it mediocre, it is anything but that, it is also in retrospective a worse “game” than some contemporary titles like Broken Sword or ToonStruck.

I’ll strongly suggest to take out all the cheaply AI generated music from this “back up” and save themselves some space.

Today I Learned@lemmy.world•TIL: Over 33% of All Food Produced Globally is Wasted
7·1 month agoI heard that the whole tomato throw thing in Spain was held mostly for keeping prices up, and in fact most grape producing countries did also entertain grape dumping on good years.
When I asked an economics major, he told me that while charity is great and all, the costs of logistics (especially when it isn’t end to end) is more costly than just buying it straight at the market.
So we’re just dumping the food.

Technology@lemmy.world•Hurray! This German State Decides to Save €15 Million Each Year By Kicking Out Microsoft for Open Source
7·1 month agoThis is a bit of ancient history, but back when Munich decided to move away from Microsoft (only because MS dropped Windows NT 4.0), it is said that Ballmer tried first dropping license fees down to a whooping 90% for a limited time.
That didn’t work, so MS started a campaign of FUD against Linux that lasted ten years (e.g. http://www.linuxinsider.com/rsstory/77174.html).
Then a year later, it was announced that MS would move its DACH headquarters to Munich and almost serendipitously, Munich also declared that it was moving back into Microsoft’s arms for… em… pure bureaucratic reasons: http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/3006352/munich-it-chief-slams-citys-surprise-decision-to-dump-linux-for-windows
For the love of Pete I don’t remember from whom I heard it first or if I read it somewhere, but at a point Bill Gates was gloating about negotiating with Munich on behalf of Microsoft.
In any case, he never left: https://www.windowscentral.com/microsoft/bill-gates-still-backstage-manages-microsoft
