Life is unfair, but unless we acknowledge our own failings it will never get better.

You want to walk through life blaming everyone else for everything that goes wrong in your life and take no responsibility for your own actions? Feel free. But just know nothing will ever get better for you.

I even acknowledge, multiple times, that it is not solely the fault of the person. But that does not mean they have no will of their own, no ability to change their circumstances. Sometimes that freedom is not enough, but unless you do something to take charge of your own life, again, nothing will ever change.

Failure often comes at multiple points, it doesn’t just fail at one. It’s a failure of education, of social pressures, of lack of positive environments, and yes of choice. The problem with free will is that you have the chance to choose wrong. You can blame everyone in the world, but if you don’t take accountability for your own actions and choices, nothing will change.

There has never been a time with as much access to information as now. While there as much, likely more, misinformation… that does not mean individuals have no culpability for their own lack of knowledge or understanding.

That doesn’t mean it’s exclusively their fault, or even anywhere near a majority. But that does not mean they lose all free will for their own actions. It does not mean they have no ability to be better.

Should we place the weight of the world on their shoulders? Absolutely not, that is liable to break them. But we also shouldn’t hide them from the burden of their own free will. That only weakens them.

The Orville had that in the first season or so, after that it went heavy into serialization. I dont think I even finished whatever the last season was because of it.

Speaking of highly overrated things…

Battlestar Galactica. Like a lot of the shows people have been mentioning, all it did was raise the stakes every episode. It didn’t feel like it was building anything meaningful, just building up to something.

The most meaningful example of this (spoilers for like a twenty year old show) for me was when they’re in the ship looking for water or whatever and the human cylon just ignores the indicator saying “Water here! Check here!” and the scene just. keeps. going. I swear it felt like half the episode.

I miss when shows could just grow in the first season or two, and then you’d only get raising stakes two or three times a year (season finale/premier and sweeps). Otherwise they’re just stories.

These days shows have to justify themselves right out of the gate.

The odds are 1000:0 that they won’t, and I still wouldn’t take that bet.

And if you get rid of the board, the shareholders will appointment a new one. If you somehow get rid of all the shareholders, like-minded people will slot themselves into those positions.

The problems are systemic, not individual.

These things don’t come with switches. You don’t just flip it on and off. It’s more like a snowball rolling down a hill. It starts small, but if it keeps up momentum, it ends up burying a small town.

No one called you any names. They said your advice is ridiculous, but that’s not name calling. That’s critiquing.

They’re not using your dishwasher for your needs, they’re using their dishwasher for their needs. They likely don’t overlap. Different models have different feature sets. One can say that they should have done more research into the home networking requirements for super basic features (as heavily explained in the article that we’re all commenting on, and you seem to have completely ignored), but frankly that’s beside the point. The baseline should not be well below par. The baseline should not be “download our potential spyware that also doesn’t necessarily work very well with your system just so you can use basic features”.

I’m glad you like smart features. I think people should have that kind of flexibility and choice in their home environment. The problem here is that when using this particular appliance, they don’t have that choice. That is a problem. Even if, when you use your appliance, you don’t have that issue, they do. Because they are not you, and do not have the exact same use case that you do.

Not everything is shit, we’re just in a massive downturn, so all the things that suck are growing while all the things that rule are being downplayed.

There is still beauty in the world, and there is still hope. We just have to work together to make sure it isn’t buried under all the shit we see day in and day out.
