All you can hope is that some day they are forced to support 3rd party apps because of some anti monopoly lawsuit telling them they have too.

I’m not sure if you are aware already but the reason Epic are announcing a million changes to their business is that the previous business plan was based around them successfully throwing a fortune at suing Apple to force them to support 3rd party apps and they tried and failed.

I think if it were ever going to happen that way, Epic would have succeeded.

That’s not to say it won’t still happen one day through political means. Seems plausible the EU might force it at some stage.

Futo (the organisation developing this app) appears to be a tech billionaire (Eron Wolf) firing his money at the tech industry until it stops being so shit.

This is from the about page on their website:

    Our Three Pledges

We will never sell out. All FUTO companies and FUTO-funded projects are expected to remain fiercely independent. They will never exacerbate the monopoly problem by selling out to a monopolist.

We will never abuse our customers. All FUTO companies and FUTO-funded projects are expected to maintain an honest relationship with their customers. Revenue, if it exists, comes from customers paying directly for software and services. “The users are our product” revenue models are strictly prohibited.

We will always be transparently devoted to making delightful software. All FUTO-funded projects are expected to be open-source or develop a plan to eventually become so. No effort will ever be taken to hide from the people what their computers are doing, to limit how they use them, or to modify their behavior through their software.

    (From: https://futo.org/what-is-futo/)

What they say and what they will do could of course differ but they do go to great pains to paint themselves as fundamentally opposed to be sort of action you are worried about.

  • He buys companies and lets the actually competent people do the work while claiming credit.

No he doesn’t. He meddles and interferes constantly and convinces himself that he’s adding value by doing so. That’s why Neuralink is dangerous. Meta or Alphabet or Microsoft or whoever can be trusted to let the scientists and the legal team ensure there’s very little risk of everything blowing up in their face horribly. Elon’s little empire is constantly on the verge of an absolute disaster. I would not be remotely surprised if Neuralink messes everything up so much that it sets back brain implants and BCI’s in general by decades. Purely because Elon can’t just supply the people at his businesses with the tools they need then get out of their way.

  • Depends whether or not you think most instances should take a stance against the far left. Personally I think the fact people treat Lemmy.ml as a generic all purpose sub rather than focusing that effort onto places like lemmy.world or lemm.ee is pretty messy and will only continue to create more and more issues. As for creating your own instance and defederating, why do that rather than just block their communities as a user if you want to avoid communist groups? Presumably there is a reason you wanted to be part of Beehaw?

  • What do you mean by /all?

If you mean /all on lemmy.ml, then yeah, it should, it’s what that site is for. If you mean /all on beehaw.org, that is a different /all. You could certainly debate with the beehaw community/admins about whether or not the lemmy.ml memes community belongs there and if the general consensus is that it should stay, you can block the community for yourself. That’s not the same as telling people who are using the community as intended that they are wrong for doing so.

  • You’re not on “Lemmy”. Your a pawb.social user on a Lemmy.ml community. Lemmy.ml is not Lemmy. Lemmy.ml is an Lemmy instance (just like pawb.social.) The purpose of the Lemmy.ml instance is for communists to come together to talk communist shit. The memes community within Lemmy.ml therefore is an absolutely perfect place for them to post left-wing memes. If you want to see memes by and for a general purpose audience then hang out at at Lemmy.world memes community. It’s not Lemmy.ml user’s fault you think they are a general purpose Lemmy instance like Lemmy.world is. That’s your fault and the solution is for you to make an effort to find the spaces that serve your needs not to pick random spaces and tell them they are doing it wrong for not alligning to your incorrect expectations.

Lemmy.ml is fundamentally a communist community. Leave it and join somewhere like Lemmy.world if you want to be part of a community that doesn’t have a political agenda. This energy you are expanding complaining that a social network isn’t meeting your expectations could be more productively spent just checking which ones do and which ones don’t. You might as well be complaining about all the Star Trek memes on the Star Trek Lemmy instance.

It is fundamentally a communist instance. The reason people are annoyed at you is that you want a “politics” free experience but rather than make the effort to curate what you expose yourself to you’re just wandering into places and insisting they be what you want.
