Truly hard to use I’d say are hubzilla and its forks. The rest of the Fediverse doesn’t require much knowledge and aren’t as hard as their userbases pretend they are (they aren’t even hard at all)

Smaller instances, being smaller are actually easier to moderate and have and easier time detecting those things than then bigger ones. Small instance many times are small, not because they’re new but because they heavily moderate who can belong to their server and federate with their content.

It’s the biggest instance that tend to have worst quality of moderation, thus being more at risk of things like AI scraping or bots.

There’s a reason people who practically have been on the fediverse from the very beginning tend to tell you to avoid flagship and massive instances; those are a moderation nightmare, both to their own admins and to other intances’ admins.

On what’s stopping corporations from taking over the Fediverse…We are. Our ability to decide whom we federate with is stopping corporations from taking over.

It’s always a good idea to have more than one account in different servers in case one of them goes down, you get banned, etc. It’s also a good idea to be in servers running different software. A software may stop being developed altogether (that’s not Lemmy case, but has been known to happen) and been on servers running old software can be a security risk.

It would be great if nomadic identity were a possibility in ActivityPub, that will make things much easier, both in terms of posting and moving instances.

The social media lemm.ee runs the software Lemmy and forms part, along side other social media (server/instances/providers) of the Lemmy network that simultaneously forms part of the Fediverse.

OP and you too are on Lemmy because you are part of servers that run Lemmy, and that actively make part of the Lemmy network in all its aspects, up to its distinct userbase culture that differentiate it not only from the wider fediverse but also from other link aggregators like Mbin and PieFed.

Not only is your comment painfully pedantic but also patently wrong.

If an admin put limitations to who can or can’t belong and/or interact with their server, it’s their responsibility to whitelist and blacklist accordingly.

People can perfectly understand terms like instance or server…if they are explained to them.

They are also accustomed to concepts like social media and social network that can also be used to explain the Fediverse. Each server is its own social media platforms interacting with eachother through a distributed social network.

But, I actually think the Fediverse require an intermediate point between social media and social network, or something above it.

If the Fediverse (including in this case all decentralised protocols like ActivityPub, Zot/Nomad, Diaspora, Ostatus, AT Proto, etc) is a Social network and each particular instance it’s own social media platforms that interact within the network, the software they run and the community they form part of within the wider fediverse is an intermediate stage between social medium and social network.
Now, if each server/instance are social media platforms and the software they run are the social network; the protocol or protocol they use is/are a network of networks and the Fediverse a network of networks of networks of social media platforms.

I use Wafrn and I don’t know how exactly the devs did it, but wafrn gives you the ability to enable a bluesky account and interact with people there without being in the official server. I particularly don’t have it enabled because I don’t care for it, it’s basically twitter 2.0 and I hated twitter. So I have no intention to engage in or with a place that’s basically ““decentralised” twitter”, but it’s there and it’s opt-in.
