  • Do programmers actually like bash?

I’m not a programmer and I really don’t like bash. Not because I don’t like shell. In fact I do like fish as a shell. But bash always feels super weird. Unfortunately that’s kind of the compatibility baseline on Linux (I don’t think any relevant system needs strict sh compatibility). But better bash’s weird arrays than none at all, plus process substitution is handy.

  • SSRIs and SNRIs helped a lot of people, going after them is a recipe for disaster.

Sure, I’d prefer if fewer people needed them, and they do have downsides. But in my opinion, the reasons for the mental conditions that require treatment are mostly societal, and there are no signs of these improving.

What’s the alternative going to be? Tricyclics? Therapy for everyone? I suspect it’s a “fuck you” to everyone affected.

My only hope is that he’ll actually push for legalisation of psychedelics which in some cases might offer an alternative, though they come with their own downsides (e.g. a friend of mine is on SSRIs but probably couldn’t replace them with psychs for his depression because he had panic attacks and could be at risk for psychosis).

    Luckily we aren’t US citizens.

One day, the tables will turn.

That day will be a test of character

Why some people are like this? Don’t know and trying to make sense of it is often futile, especially if you’re caught in the relationship yourself and as such have only a limited / warped perspective… all I can say is that his behavior is extremely sickening.

Everyone deserves love, empathy and compassion from their parents - I’m sorry that your father seems incapable of that, but none of that is your fault.

  • If smart people love libreoffice, then I must be dumb. Working with it always seems weird and I never like it.

Fortunately, I can use LaTeX for work; it is far from without issues but while being arcane sometimes (especially when tables are involved), it never really upsets me and the result looks very good. I can say neither for libreoffice or MS office. But at least the former doesn’t charge for the experience.

I hope typst gains more traction; it seems really intuitive compared to TeX and you don’t necessarily need a macro package. And while it doesn’t produce the quality of TeX-based systems yet, it is already good. Then again, Knuth’s goal first and foremost goal was quality (and it shows); the system just had to be usable by him.
