Literally everyone who uses email knows that not every email address ends in the same way and that people use different websites and tools to access their emails.

Its the only widely adopted digitally federated system that exists, where users are aware of the federation aspect. What could be a better technical comparison?
Whenever anything is “federated” the easiest comparison is email. Everyone can use different email servers and applications, but they can all still communicate with each other. “Email” is the shared protocol that structures how data is exchanged between servers and clients.
The fediverse instead uses a protocol named “activitypub”, but works similar. Just a bunch of servers that speak the same technical language which enables them to freely exchange information. But while email only supports single messages, activitypub supports more complex structures that developers for platforms like lemmy or mastodon can use to make actual applications with an interface that gives you an easy way to display and structure that data like as a forum or blogging platform.
You’re right, it has been released, but matrix.org and most other servers either havent activated QR login or arent using MAS. It will be sick tho, the demos make it look very fast and smooth.
While matrix/element is still very much in development, it is improving constantly. A year ago i sometimes had issues with desynced encryption keys and now that never happens anymore. There is now a modern group call and screensharing system and the new ElementX mobile app which is much faster than the old app. Now there is also OIDC and in a few weeks QR code login will be released, so no more manually entering login and encryption key verification stuff.
Monthly Active Users :3
There will always be moderation. If you dont ban certain things, people will have to defederate your server or risk being raided by the police. That being said, there are some more lenient servers, but few servers are completely hands off. Your server is not what decides whether your post gets deleted or not however. That is always decided by the mod of the community you post/comment in.
Yeah, whenever two models interact or build on top of each other, the result becomes more and more distorted. They have already scraped close to 100% of the crawlable internet, so they dont know what to do now. Seems like they cant optimize much more or are simply too dumb to do it properly.
Matrix and Email :D
Matrix certainly counts as “federated” which is whats in the title, but its not using activitypub so its not “fediverse”. Email is also federated and i assume you have that too lol
If an instance has multiple hundred active users, i doubt its going anywhere anytime soon. You can also just contact the admin of any server and ask how they fund it and what their future plans are. The “first seen” column also quickly gives you an idea of how long standing the server is.
Neither. Never go for an instance thats at the top in terms of user count unless there is a specific reason to do so. This applies to all fediverse or decentralized services.
Go for any of the ones below the red line or sort this table by MAU and find one even further down. Excluding US based servers is also something to think about.
The power dynamic is still 1000000:1 they can do whatever they want and you will have to follow. If they defederate you, there is no value in your self hosted instance.
The biggest thing is that you need to be manually authorized by them for federation. They will only ever federate with servers that arent serious enough competition to lead to democratization of the overall network.
Just sit next to the airport with a telescope on days you know he will be there. He would have to change IDs every flight to avoid this.
Nah this is funny af. Fuck religion.
If it “breaks” it might not actually sever the strands of the material, and behave more like wood splitting along its length. Also if it was oxidation then the whole cut surface on the right should be completely black.
It says “GrapheneOS developers do not wish to use reddit as a platform to discuss their products”. What do you not understand about this?
Also there isnt much of a point in dropping bombs on an empty field, so they are mostly found in populated areas. That means most of the ones close to the surface got found right after the war by people seeing the impact zone. The deeper ones just havent been found. So this kinda thing where its close to the surface, but hasnt been found, can only happen when the bomb was dropped in an area that wasnt frequented by people for a few years after the war. When it was freshly dropped it was probably quite visible.
Nah this xkcd really doesnt apply here. If you can can see and have at least the intelligence of a 6 year old then you can see that something is different about email compared to whatsapp or signal. With even the most basic pattern recognition skills you will find that everyone you know uses different apps, sites and addresses. Compare this to normal messengers where literally everyone will have the exact same app, interface and way to contact people.
