  • I have a 70+ year old friend that paper files. She doesn’t trust the free file places available here (USA). I don’t blame her.

Ysk - You can order the forms for free on the IRS (& state) websites.

I print things for her on my 1999 laser jet if she needs something printed.

Many years I paper filed just to inconvenience them slightly for not offering free file.

  • In college, early 90s, our student IDs had our photo and SSN on it

I’ve operated ever since under rhe assumption anyone and everyone has access to it.

Then with all the data breaches over the last 10/15 years? Freeze credit reports with the 3 reporting agencies for free. Check for extra accounts with the free annual credit report pulls.

For all practical purposes, our SSNs are easily obtained by someone who wants it.

I’m not sure what the solution is, but a unique identifier has to be housed somewhere where in can be accessed in a format humans can read, which means it can be accessed and dumped so it’s no longer private or secret.

I’m not a fan of biometrics, and I tolerate 2FA. I really think it’s more important we change how we think about and use personal, unique, identifiers (like SSNs)

My grandma was born in WV 1919. I asked her a lot over the years (she passed in 2015)

Your great grandma may be different… but keep in mind, she’s human. And if she’s anything like my grandma, she will lie, or more charitably have some false recreations of certain memories.

So asking round about questions to get more details about certain things can sometimes get some interesting truths exposed without her realizing it.

Do not point out inconsistencies in an accusing way!!!

Remember not everything is the actual truth, even if she’s being honest. We are human and our memories are swiss cheese on good days. None of us remember everything with 100% accuracy.

Oh, and ask about her favorite music through the years, or favorite foods. Sometimes sounds, tastes l, and smells can trigger memories!

  • Seriously. I managed a small rock band for a while. We got picked to tour with another band in some clubs in Eastern Europe. This was pre-Spotify, but Facebook strong.

We had no CD sales pre-tour to these places, just some views on youtube. We were relying a lot on the other band.

But the people that came to the shows? They knew the words and sang along and we had a great time.

Someone had our music and shared it before we got there. And we were grateful for those pirates!! And yes, we sold some merch and CDs at the shows.

If not for the pirates it would have been a much different experience with a lot less people showing up.

Our band never “made it” but it was still a successful tour and a helluva lot of fun. In large part because our music was pirated and shared ahead of time.

  • I mean, Kamala is running on policies that would help the little guy. And she might lose to guy who SA’s women and said he could shoot someone in the street.

If she wins and we get a peaceful transfer of power, then I’ll have more faith in your dream.

But right now, it seems like violence is what the masses crave over social reform.

  • Devil’s Food cake/cookies. Originally they were Nabisco: https://i.pinimg.com/originals/9b/a0/af/9ba0af2803a08d55bdc523ad21648559.jpg The red and yellow box. These were a wonderful memory from my childhood. Then you could only find Snackwell’s version. They were like 95% of what I remembered, not exact but so close they were still good. The last box I got (in the before times) tasted absolutely terrible and nothing like they used to. Tasted like dryness and absence of sweetness with no chocolate flavor. Texture wrong, everything wrong. Amazon would not accept my review of the new recipe. I may have compared them to the Devil’s butthole. Evidently those are discontinued now. I guess they went the route of making the new recipe so hateful we would celebrate the end of the production.

I’d love to be able to have something that tastes like the original ones though.

  • It sounds like she is definitely not fat, so you can be truthful and you aren’t looking for a way to tactfully say she is at an unhealthy weight. What it sounds like is happening instead is a bunch of busybodies are just stirring up trouble and trying to undermine her self confidence. If it wasn’t her weight, it would be her clothes or some other body part they would criticize. (for instance they’d claim she had a weird nose or ears, I had a “friend” comment on my how my knees looked weird and knobby one time. They were and are normal knees. My grandma tried to make me feel like there was something wrong with me because my breasts hadn’t come in yet. I was 12. Both of these were people “looking out for me and trying to help” - they were not. They were trying to make themselves feel better at my expense.

You need to make sure she realizes these comments other people are making are not motivated in kindness, even if they are claiming they are. Try to find ways to help her see her worth and to help her ignore the bullying comments by these people.

Because of mainly my grandma, I learned to recognize when these comments were meant to be mean and to not let let them affect my self-esteem. Instead I realized they just made the person saying them look worse.

Occasionally, when they would get a comment in about something, like a big pimple, I would gray rock it and respond with, “yeah, that happens, oh well” and move on. Learning to not give them a reaction also makes it not fun for them after a while and they find other targets or shut up.

Learning to gray rock and not internalize the crap other people are flinging will help a lot. Having someone like you that she can trust to be actually kind and honest will help her reinforce to herself that the other people are just being unkind.
