In general, I prefer the look and feel of chromium-based browsers, but I use Firefox and Firefox forks for the reasons that I’m sure everyone here is aware of.

If those reasons go away, I’ll just switch to Vivaldi as my primary browser. I won’t be happy about it, but if Firefox becomes another AI slop project. I might as well go with the browser whose UX I prefer.

I don’t necessarily disagree, but the fact they walked back the original policy because it was so unpopular leads me to believe they are trying to save face by implementing a PITA way of enabling unknown sources, such as through ADB.

The reason why I suspect that is because even with the original policy change, they were still going to allow unsigned apps to be installed via ADB.

But to answer your question, they would have provided an OS update to only allows app installations from verified developers, no matter the source.

To get verified developers have to submit identification to Google and go through a Google process.

So it wouldn’t matter if the install source was a third-party repo, or Google Play, the system would not have installed any applications not signed by a Google authorized certificate.

That becomes very problematic because it gives Google the ability to restrict applications outside of the Google Play Store ecosystem.

They were copying Apple’s playbook from the EU wherein Apple was legally mandated to allow third-party app stores, and in response Apple required all apps to be signed by an Apple verified developer certificate, no matter the repo.

And wouldn’t you know it, Apple either revoked or would not provide certificates to developers of apps Apple didn’t like, such as BitTorrent clients.

It’s systemic, and whether or not it’s perpetrated directly by big tech, they are the primary beneficiaries i.e. increased ad sales.

This is a problem that requires regulation, which means it will not be addressed meaningfully, as that won’t happen anytime soon.

Projectivy launcher for Android TV is great and will remove home screen ads, and provide a much more streamlined interface overall.

Apple TV is really nice though, clean, smooth, and stable. I honestly would recommend that to most people, especially if they already have Apple products.

I didn’t single out any particular YouTube channel for individual scorn. My comment was in reference to that very well sourced video about private equity buying up / investing many YouTube channels, of which they provided sources for in the description of the video.

The video which made the accusations, not me, provided sources for all of the claims.

I don’t think many people on Lemmy are under the the spell of AI hype, but plenty of people here are knowledgeable enough to know when, and when not, to leverage this useful, but dangerously overhyped and oversold, piece of technology.

Ask the model to confirm the answer and it will correct itself, at least when I’ve tried that.

I’m sure there’s a mathematical or programmatic logic as to why, but seeing as I don’t need LLM’s to count letters or invent new types of pseudoscience, I’m not overly interested in it.
