Magnetic Field Breakdown

Most sources state that permanent magnets lose their magnetic field strength at a rate of 1% per year. Assuming this is valid, after ~69 years, we can assume that half of the sectors in a hard drive would be corrupted (since they all lost half of their strength by this time). Obviously, this is quite a long time, but this risk is easily mitigated - simply re-write the data to the drive. How frequently you need to do this depends on the following two issues (I also go over this in my conclusion).

Tape storage is the gold standard but it’s just not realistically applicable to low scale operations or personal data storage usage. Proper long term storage HDDs do exist and are perfectly adequate to the job as i specified above and i can attest this from personal experience.

I did not meant to come across as saying that HDDs don’t suffer bit rot. However, there are specific long term storage HDDs that are built specifically to be powered up sporadically and resist external magnetic influences on the track. In a proper storage environment they will last over 5 years without being powered up and still retain all information. I know it because i use them in this exact scenario for over 2 decades. Conversely there are no such long term storage SSDs.

SSDs store information through trapped charges which most certainly lose charge through quantuum tunneling as well as generalized charge leakage. As insulation loses effectiveness, the potential barrier for the charge allows for what is normally a manageable effect, much like in the CPU like you said, to become out of the scope of error correction techniques. This is a physical limitation that cannot be overcome.

I doubt it. SSDs are subject to quantuum tunneling. This means if you don’t power up an SSD once in 2-5 years, your data is gone. HDDs have no such qualms. So long as they still spin, there’s your data and when they no longer do, you still have the heads inside.

So you have a use case that SSDs will never replace, cold data storage. I use them for my cold offsite back ups.

Lol at the notion that you’ll get to speak to any engineer when your machine breaks. Best they can do is a call center in India getting paid minimum wage that follows a script and circles around a bit between them until you either give up or they RMA your stuff to feed you a bill later for repairs.

You use their servers to find your device and then exchange directly with it. They have discovery servers that link you when you don’t have a fixed ip address.

Or you can host your own personal discovery server for that.

Have you tried syncthing-fork? You can synchronize folders across the internet with it between all sorts of devices, including android. No middlemen required since it’s peer to peer.

My theory is the following, i think what saved the US from being stuck on cold war propaganda was the internet. For a long time the US was truly great. It was a steadfast ally, a reliable trade partner and it helped rebuild the EU post WW2. It had railroads everywhere, cable cars everywhere, struggled and won against prohibition and oligarchs, treading ground on worker’s rights and rights of minorities.

Then the cold war came and things went seriously downhill. Because of the cold war a lot of things were done in secret and a lot was invested in propaganda. Corporations were allowed to do many things in secret. People in the US were told they were the best at everything and everyone else sucked. They never heard what the world really did think of them, only here and there by immigrants, who were seen as an inferior class anyway.

Then the internet came and finally the US heard what the world thinks of them and boy, it wasn’t pretty. Took a while too, many places didn’t have the infrastructure ready. The world wasn’t happy, the US had been doing very bad things in secret and so, US people finally saw what their country leaders had been doing.

The US isn’t a hopeless case but the US is at war with itself. A war that started in the 1800s and still rages on against an oligarch class that managed to inflitrate itself within the higher echelons of the government. Who took their railways away and their cable cars. Who took their days off and their workers rights and in some cases, even took away their right to strike (like the railroad workers).

They can’t vote their way out of this, both parties are deeply corrupt. The ones that could stop it, the regulatory agencies, are currently being gutted out. Now is a critical time for the US to change and make regulatory organs apolitical and independent from the executive branch. What is done now will define if the US will become an oligarchic dystopia or will return to its roots. I believe the destruction caused by Trump will invariably lead to the demise of the oligarchy, for oligarchy persists in denial and secret and what Trump is doing is reckless and obvious. But a time of shame has come to the US for what has been done.

Once people in the US realize that the bipartisan struggle is an artificial struggle and that no president is coming to save them, republican or democrat, hopefully protests will spring up everywhere and when they start, real meaninful change can appear. Every American knows the establishment is everywhere. Every American knows they’re in a class war.

Every American wants to fight it, but the Republicans say Democrats are the establishment and the Democrats say Republicans are the establishment. To overcome this both Republicans and Democrats must recognize they are fighting the same enemy and it’s not each other. The republican party and the democrat party are both artificial constructs of many political views that don’t translate to anything in the real world of politics. They’re amalgamations of parties that have differing political views who might win elections but won’t effect meaningful change on account of that. It serves the interest of the oligarchs that no matter which party wins, they win.

I personally also suggest KeePass2 for an offline vault storage that you can use with Syncthing to synchronize so the data never leaves your devices.

It’s worth mentioning that both these programs are subject to leaks in machines infected with malware like OP’s was, so maybe if malware is a problem you deal with regularly, i suggest the online options.

I really doubt any sort of US action could lead to the EU fracturing.

If anything, having to deal with the US has brought us closer together. On one side there’s Trump making a fool of himself and of the US. On the other side there’s Musk, thinking he can take on European unions and actually win, because he thinks he’s still in the US, and in the middle there’s what i like to call the sheep pen of tech companies. We shear their wool for fines on privacy violations every couple of months to fund our regulatory organs.

The thing about anonymity that a lot of people don’t get is that there is no such thing as 100% anonymous. Vpn makes it more expensive to track you. Tor makes it more expensive to track you. Good opsec makes it more expensive to track you but ultimately, if you’ve got a target on your back, there is no way to be 100% anonymous.

The thing you gotta ask yourself is, what is your threat model ? Are you hiding from LEO on account of torrents or just want some privacy from corporations? VPN is fine. Are you buying drugs on the darkweb ? TOR is fine. Are you selling drugs on the darkweb ? You probably need a more sophisticated masking network mesh. Are you involved in CSAM or run a darkweb market ? Nothing you do will help you, you are going to get caught, that is a certainty.

Don’t go wasting your precious brain matter on developing a leak free network. There is no such thing. If someone wants badly to track you down, with enough money, they will. Best you can do is be a little bit more trouble than it’s worth to spend on you. For some things, like i mentioned before, there is a cutoff point where you’re as anonymous as you’ll ever be. For others, there is basically unlimited resources to track you. Even using TOR, they can get you at your entry node, like it has happened before, if no one else in your neighborhood is connected to TOR.

ESA is the European Space Agency. It’s a pretty prominent acronym. They really couldn’t bother researching it before registering their little butthurt group? Imagine making a corporate group and calling it NASA.

Even if such a thing existed, which given the analysis parameters makes it far too complex for automation (like for instance, how would such a software distinguish between old deleted data still residing in empty space and a vault file hidden in empty space without a follow up analysis of the data itself. It would probably alert the user for something, but the amount of false positives would probably lead an untrained user to ignore the alerts eventually) i would guess it doesn’t, but if it did, it would have to process petabytes every day, from all over the country and the system would have to be maintained, which going by government record of informatics systems, doesn’t seem likely that it would be readily available for everyone that gets stopped at a border stop consistently. It’s like an anti virus search, with all the false positives it comes up with, but 100 times slower, plus the transmission of the entire disk clone file, plus the cloning process itself.

Moreover the cost of maintaining such a system when 95%+ of the population doesn’t have the know how to use complex data obfuscation measures and LEO rarely obtains information out of these cursory searches for arrests. On published news articles LEO always ends up using snitches, google searches or usage of the TOR network in a given area to catch criminals. Data forensics only come into play later on. Presumably, dollar for dollar, they would probably invest in what works best instead of casting such a wide net.

In sum, I’m not cleared to know such information, but i am guessing such a thing, while technologically possible, seems economically unfeasible and liable to be used only in specific cases. If i had a border security budget, i would certainly not invest in a mega server to swift through every bit of empty and occupied space of all the randomly selected people for a search that come in through the ports of entry. However i could be wrong.

I think you overvalue the skillset of border security. This may seem trivial to you but it’s uncommon to hire people trained to this level of competence and put them at every point of entry. A decent cybersecurity investigator needs a big salary.

That would probably happen if you were already a suspect of something or a high profile person and they moved in resources for you. No way border security is randomly sweeping for headers and entropy, they basically just look at it with the explorer and clone it, possibly using some software to scan for known security vulnerabilities to access encrypted parts. That would be a court ordered search or a high profile crime investigation, or maybe a really really unlucky day where the expert was already there for another reason, but the rest i agree.

If your threat model makes you a high profile person, then smuggling data in hidden containers is definitely not the best solution. A non associated personal cloud server is best.
