Here’s my personal answer to that question. I care about privacy. However, maintaining it has become a never ending process that gets more complicated as time goes on. Plus there’s always more one could do. I’m not going to stop using payment cards, I’m not going to get a prepaid phone running graphene, I’m not going to whatever comes next.
I’m starting to think that my personal cost/benefit analysis is leaning towards not caring about privacy. What have I gotten out of trying to maintain privacy? Inconvenience and expense. What have I gained from letting the creepy corpo overlords watch me? A decent map app, autocorrect, 3% cash back at restaurants and groceries, facebook marketplace. It really seems like I get services and discounts for giving up my privacy.
I even signed up for that fucking global entry program so I can have TSA precheck and get through customs fast. I hate that. It feels so wrong but I’m growing increasingly sure it doesn’t matter. I’m not special, the government won’t care about me now or in the future, and the benefits of not caring outweigh the gains of trying to hide.
This is a terrible point of view, I know, but I just don’t care anymore. I like the idea of privacy, but I’m finding the practicality to be too difficult.

Technology@lemmy.world•Peter Thiel Antichrist lecture: We asked guests what the hell it isEnglish
7·2 months agoIn the podcast, Thiel explained that he believes the Antichrist will present itself as an advocate for regulation, pushing to slow technological and scientific progress in the name of safety. He suggested, with a straight face, that the Antichrist could look a lot like 22-year-old climate activist Greta Thunberg.
He’s just getting the jump on his opposition. Of course regulations are the work of the antichrist. The one legal thing that could stop whatever shit he’s cooking up is a biblical boogieman. You better think twice if you want to reign in AI or environmental degradation, because that’s anti-jesus.
Does he really think a lecture series will spread that message? Wouldn’t youtube videos be better? Why in-person lectures?
Also why is he threatened by someone like Greta? Greta has no power. More broadly speaking, the left, however you’d like to define it, is unorganized and therefore has no power. Furthermore any serious actions as of late appear to result in capture of the actors. There’s not a damn thing that can be done unless you want to throw yourself away.

Privacy@lemmy.ml•Does anyone have a Faraday bag for phone that works?
2·3 months agoRight, but if it’s compromised what’s a faraday cage going to do? As soon as you remove it from the cage it’ll reveal your location.

3·3 months agoHere’s a pdf link to a 2020 NSA publication on the subject: https://media.defense.gov/2020/Aug/04/2002469874/-1/-1/0/CSI_LIMITING_LOCATION_DATA_EXPOSURE_FINAL.PDF
It seems that powering the device off is sufficient unless the device is compromised.

3·3 months agoSome phones, even if they are turned off, still send telemetry data.
I can’t find anything other than redditors making this claim. Is there a better source I can look into?

Privacy@lemmy.ml•Does anyone have a Faraday bag for phone that works?
33·3 months agoWhy would one want to put their phone in a faraday cage? I know what the cage does, but don’t understand why you’d want to use one instead of turning the device off.
Edit: According to this, unless your phone is compromised, turning it off is sufficient.

3·4 months agoYou’re calling me a bot? In whay sense of the word? Can you find something more recent? Here’s what I’ve found. This metaanalysis from 2020 concluded there was an association. However, this comment points out several flaws in their metaanalysis.
So I guess we don’t 100% know for sure? If that’s the case then I’d guess the effect is very small or nonexistant.

Mildly Infuriating@lemmy.world•How much spacing while stopped at a red light?English
1·4 months agoI’ve noticed this as well, first time was Texas in 2020. I’d lived in other places prior and never noticed it. I’ve sinced moved away from Texas, and the bahavior is a lot less common here. I couldn’t figure out why people did it. My theory is, people initially stop at a reasonable distance from the next car and pull out their phone. The next car moves a bit forward for some reason, and the person on their phone doesn’t notice.
I can’t help but detect some passive hostility in your response.
Not in the US apparently
I didn’t know sony made phones
Alright what phone are you using with a jack?
That’s not simple. That’s very specific, and you really listen for 10 solid hours? Also if you’re dropping 10 hour flight money… I feel like there’s a wireless solution in your price range
The battery? Mine last at least 8 hours and charge in two.
Okay, I’m going to ask… why don’t you use wireless?
Edit: some results are in, and the only reasonable answer is better audio quality, although that’s probably no longer true. The rest are fairly weak reasons.
Lol’d at the 10m extension cord though, thanks for that one.

This whole privacy thing is based solely on belief? There’s no practical reason for it unless you’re on a state actor’s list or something?
