What does it default to? Google+bing+DDG?
I’m not seeing that option anywhere. Nor does it allow me to change the “weight”. I found a github discussion saying it should show up after you save the settings, but I tried that on two instances and didn’t get any unique URL.
Ah, I found it under the “cookies” tab. Needs to be more obvious IMO.
it’s as good or better than
It’s only as good as the search engines you select. Which ones have you selected?
I checked it out, but most of the public instances I looked at use google + bing. I think I only came across one that used Mojeek, but they deranked it so google results were still at the top.
Yeah you can customize them – if you never clear your cookies.
Pretty much need to self-host it to customize it.
I haven’t observed that on Lemmy or Mastodon.

How do you find out what mastodon instances block others?
it’s slowly turning into the old twitter.
How?
The problems would only get exacerbated if more of them migrate over here, that’s the issue.
I doubt that it would make Lemmy significantly worse. I’ve already had to block nearly a hundred lemmy communities for containing the “mindless trash” that is abundant on reddit. The reality is that most people aren’t smart and don’t want to browse and participate in intellectual content. They want to mindlessly scroll through endless memes. I have not observed that people on lemmy are overall more intelligent than people on reddit.
I don’t think so. I think Lemmy already & inherently has many of the same problems. People are people, no matter where you go.
Lemmy is only better because it’s not centrally controlled.
you just write in Markdown (the same thing Lemmy uses), pick a theme, and you’re good to go
That is far too basic for most websites. It’s absurd to suggest that’s a valid alternative for something like Wordpress + Elementor.
Squarespace should be on the table for static websites as well.
How so? It’s not static that I’m aware of, unless you’re exporting it to a file after using the UI to create it?
I assumed we were talking about direct replacements for WordPress, not hosted alternatives.
Well, as you said, Wordpress does a lot of things. Shopify, Wordpress, Squarespace, etc., are certainly interchangeable/competitors to a large degree. Wordpress has hosted options and is a default/main option for many hosting companies.
You can build a full website with every major function and design option with Wordpress. You can’t with Jekyll and Hugo unless you can code.
static site? - Hugo, Jekyll, etc - just generates regular HTML
These are either vastly more limited, or they require you to be able to code.
ecommerce? - consider nopCommerce or OpenCard
I’ve never heard of these, but I have seen people say that if you want to do ecommerce you should only use Shopify, because even small differences can result in people not purchasing your products.
What would you use instead?
Ventoy > Rufus and also bypasses them by default.
Forums are still around. People just got lazy and started using reddit instead. Search engines are also to blame since they don’t bring up smaller forums in search results. People can go back to forums if they want.

Ask on their github https://github.com/fmhy/FMHY/issues. I don’t see it listed anywhere, but it should be listed.
